This photograph was taken by a U.S. Army Signal Corps photographer on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France during the D-Day landings on 6 June 1944.
In the photo, heavily laden American soldiers wade on to the beach from LSTs seen in the background, just offshore. This photo was taken later in the day, after the murderous fire from the cliffs had been suppressed and men could make it to dry land with much less risk than faced by the first assault troops in the morning.
