Specialist 4 Richard Champion, squad leader, Company B, 4th Battalion, 21st Infantry, 11th Light Infantry Brigade, shouts instructions to his squad after receiving sniper fire while on patrol on Hill 56, 70 miles southeast of Chu Lai. Photo date: 19 January 1971.

Spec. 4 Champion holds his M16 rifle and has a machine gun link belt of 5.56mm ammo around his neck, a carrier for extra magazines and what appears to be an M26A1 fragmentation grenade hooked to his belt.
