This 1943 photo shows women employees at the Savannah Quartermaster Depot, Savannah, GA, stacking steel jerry cans into a boxcar for shipment.

The 5-gallon jerry can was developed early in WW II, copied from a German design that had been also adopted by the British. The Olive-Drab.com section on Jerry Cans for gasoline and water has more details of the cans and their development.

The photo bears the U.S. Army Signal Corps seal at the lower left.
